      1. In case numbers alone seem abstract, the #BoliviaFires have been devastatingly bad this past week. @CarwilBJ/1174784300442705920

During last week alone, some 586,000 hectares of forest burned in Bolivia. Nearly a Delaware-sized chunk of tropical dry forest. The pace is really quick and we're still in the middle of fire season. #BoliviaFires

Despite valiant fire fighting efforts, it will probably be the rains that extinguish these blazes and those may be weeks or months off. #BoliviaFires

1.5 M hectares of burnt forest is 2.7% of Bolivia's total forested area. Put another way, the entire Bolivia forest would burn down in 25.5 years at this pace. #BoliviaFires

The whole forest won't burn down in 2019. Many of the more distant sections will have the chance to regrow, as significant areas did after 2010. Those areas that are changed into soy or sunflower oil fields won't. Nor those made into cattle pastures. #BoliviaFires

The large sections burned down in protected areas mean a lot of dead wildlife, a degraded landscape, and potential pathways for agricultural colonization of these areas. #BoliviaFires

But the most permanent damage will be where permanent agricultural cultivation or cattle grazing take over. This is where real and immediate restrictions on turning forests into property matter. #BoliviaFires
