          1. OpenAI's newest tool, Operator, seems custom-designed to burn as much computing power is possible on simple tasks. Operator is basically a self-driving web browser user. Demo task is adding recipe items to an instacart shopping list.

OpenAI's reasoning models are already using way more computer power than earlier computer programs. Operator adds an OCR vision layer to read and interpret webpages, instead of just passing the HTML. (because you can't just program LLMs, you have to "prompt" them)

The task involved could be solved by an open source programmer with less than .001 of the computing time required. But doing that wouldn't fit the AI hype narrative. So much energy is going to be wasted on these "solutions", which won't even reliably execute the tasks involved.

Any software engineer who adds a computer vision layer in the middle of an automation task's stack isn't interested in solving the tasks involved. They're building a marketing gimmick.

"My recipe and shopping task requires AI and OCR" is a bug not a feature.
