@_binshi_ This is a horrible summary of this research article. Land ecosystems continued to absorb carbon as normal, but some of them–especially Canadian forests–burned down, canceling out carbon uptake last year. This wasn't mysterious, but is worrying.

@_binshi_ The annual results for one year showed a massive carbon release from a temperate forest region. They also illustrate the risks involved in losing forest ecosystems, like the Amazon. Fire risks to carbon storage are huge and could accelerate global warming.

@_binshi_ Carbon sinks aren't broken, per se, but their future depends on bending the warming curve as well as stopping deforestation. Mystifying the process "broken" / "no longer absorbing" makes the needed changes harder to see. Let's not do that.
