If you want to shift policy, pressure Democrats, elect socialists, get media coverage of alternative perspectives, build a grassroots fundraising base, making a serious primary challenge is more effective than building the Green party. At least in practice.

The potential base of the Green Party is those people who gave $27 or their vote to Bernie Sanders. And the Greens haven't reached more than a tenth of them. Both for lack of trying and for lack of an endgame to leverage their votes into power.
