    1. Liza Featherstone lays out the case for the antiwar, antigenocide movement to back replacing Joe Biden. jacobin.com/2024/07/biden-trump-election-drop-out-gaza-israel

"Biden is dangerous win or lose: he could continue to kill Palestinian children, or he could lose to Trump, a Benjamin Netanyahu fan who will provide even less of a check on Israel’s genocide than Biden"

The risk of disaffection with the Israeli war sinking the election for Biden has been obvious all year. x.com/CarwilBJ/status/1745812668378714528

Now these risks are compounded by basic problems of aging and ability, but these have also provided an off ramp besides defeat in November. Behind closed doors, and possibly at the convention, a choice is being made about who directs US policy on Israel.

The Democratic party's crisis neither begins nor ends on social media. The disaffection with Biden is huge. x.com/Ruwa4Georgia/status/1812226298208522589

Organizers with the Sunrise Movement @sunrisemvmt have called for a shift: "Joe Biden isn’t positioned to mobilize young people and win in November. … With another ticket that energizes young volunteers, we could contact up to twice as many voters this fall."

The challenge of this shift is that it won't be a pivot towards someone whose Gaza policy aligns with our values. aljazeera.com/podcasts/2024/7/9/the-take-what-changes-if-joe-biden-steps-down

Featherstone: "The antiwar left can’t plausibly endorse any alternatives to Biden, since there is no person who could win the election who has taken a sensible, humane position."

Still, the window opened by a change in leadership offers more room for pressuring the administration than the status quo.

It has long been clear that Biden is the most hawkish voice inside his administration on Israel's devastating and disastrous war, overruling dissenters inside the administration. axios.com/2023/11/13/biden-gaza-hamas-policy-state-department-memo theguardian.com/us-news/article/2024/may/30/two-more-us-officials-resign-over-biden-administrations-position-on-gaza-war

Biden seems to live in an information bubble on the issue, not distinct from the info bubble keeping him from understanding his own electoral weakness.

His political instincts on Israel make him unsuited to the kind of mulitracial coalition that can actually, for example, win Michigan.

And he will keep reminding voters of this, loudly, so long as he's in the race. Hence the absurd comparison this week between Trump's would-be assassin and anti-genocide protesters. x.com/prem_thakker/status/1812583867154407898

And Biden's even more absurd statement that: "I’m the guy who did more for the Palestinian community than anybody." He doesn't seem to remember that he's the president who ended US funding for UNRWA. x.com/RnaudBertrand/status/1813025694102004077

Even if Biden is replaced, the antiwar movement can't focus its efforts on November, we must prepare to prevent or resist a war on Lebanon, which could well come before then.
