A quick reminder: Joe Biden became the nominee through a massive intervention by party elites to get four candidates to drop out in 2020, interrupting an active primary.
-
Biden has no special small-d democratic imprimature from that year, and no right to rail against "party elites" willing to choose the candidate who they think can win.
-
What 2020 did involve, however, is a serious alteration of the Biden agenda to win over skeptical Sanders and Warren voters. Such a move would help a Biden substitute in 2024.
-
(Also, much of the much-vaulted Biden domestic legislative record comes from that promise.)
-
In this, if not her acceptance of Biden staying, AOC is exactly right: a pivot in the Democratic platform towards improving everyday lives (not just its standard bearer) is vital to winning in November.
