Picasso’s Blue Period was set off by a night in which Carles Casagemas attempted to shoot Germaine Gargallo before killing himself. Usually this double trauma is glossed as "his friend's suicide." Never is it called "his friend's near-murder for refusing a marriage proposal." x.com/avolantes/status/1327588700121952256

I've seen La Vie, Picasso’s painting my whole life, and I'm dumbstruck that I'm just learning the attempted murder side of this story. And grown adult writers in the 21st century are still writing about "the woman that drove men crazy."
