                1. The mass death of children, at a quantity rarely seen in recent warfare, is the most astounding fact about the assault on Gaza. As a scholar of political violence, thus fact propelled me to understand HOW. The mainstream US media is still inventing hypothetical scenarios. x.com/wawog_now/status/1794777955400393034

Palestinian children are being killed in their homes with their families, by air strikes and artillery. Both mass media and social media are full of such stories.

This scale of killing children diifers from all prior Israeli incursions, which killed children, but in far smaller numbers. Only a policy change can explain this.

Empirically, it has been obvious since late October that many, many of these mass killings of families in their home involve no "enemy" at all. x.com/CarwilBJ/status/1755073392334549232?t=GgSvquwuBw6hHT8YcH-Xmg&s=19

Since April, we have known that Israel is opting to kill suspected members of Hamas, foot soldier and political members, and affiliates, in their homes. These are not "enemies hiding behind children", they are people sleeping in their homes. x.com/CarwilBJ/status/1775555590690898093?t=GgSvquwuBw6hHT8YcH-Xmg&s=19

Because the targeting is tied to cell phones and coordinated via machine learning, it's spilling over to civilians and people who received Hamas members phones as well.

Regardless, reports claim, Israelis have set a threshold of permissible civilian deaths of 15-20 civilians per target. A far worse ratio than the October 7 attacks.

In the world of international humanitarian law, soldiers gone home to their bed are hors de combat and not targets at all.

This is to say nothing of children dying because hospitals are destroyed, sanitation is cut off, food is withheld.

Inventing scenarios and the phrase "legally killed children" shows a déplorable lack of curiosity about why and how actual Palestinian children are dying, and how Israeli soldiers and Israeli policy are killing them.

All of this is the journalistic failure, separate and apart from the moral abyss that such an argument represents.
