@triofrancos @DanielDenvir I definitely agree with @triofrancos that we have available options to massively downscale the amount of mining required for transportation during the #EnergyTransition. But I also think we need quantitative comparisons between fossil fuels' and renewables' mining demands.

@triofrancos @DanielDenvir The analysis by @curious_founder points out the massive mining demands of coal extraction itself. But transporting, refining, burning, and maintaining fossil fuels also demands infrastructure and numerous metals.

@triofrancos @DanielDenvir @curious_founder Qualitatively, replacing fuel infrastructure with battery and generation infrastructure is probably a net reduction in metal use. Pipelines are much thicker than wires; electric motors last longer than combustion engines; and there's potential for massive decentralization.

@triofrancos @DanielDenvir @curious_founder People need to be working on this with sophisticated methods and very large spreadsheets of inputs. I'm not sure we have a crystal clear answer yet, but I hope someone does or will soon.
