          1. I have no idea who is being challenged or subtweeted here but a quick review of American history suggests a pivotal role for spontaneous, chaotic protests in sparking organized mass mobilization… @Nonviolence30/1630998605002670087

To take iconic moments: the Boston Tea Party, Nat Turner's revolt, Harper's Ferry, the riotous defense of the Flint Sit-down Strike, the Long Hot Summer, the Alcatraz occupation, and Stonewall each played thus role.

Each was complemented by periods of mass-ification, represented respectively by the Committees of Correspondence & the Continental Army, the Underground Railroad, the Abolitionist engagement in the Civil War, the UAW, the Black Panther Party, the Red Power movement, Harvey Milk

Stonewall might be typical in this regard: a local tactical success inspiring mass public affiliation by a previously dispersed and persecuted minority.

But even the tactical failure at Harper's Ferry became the rallying cry for abolitionist struggle. The Battle Hymn of Republic is a reworking of "John Brown's Body."

Understanding the dynamic is also critical for understanding the enemies of freedom and equality. Most of the anti-Reconstruction and c. 1920 Race Massacres were local flare-ups of violence with generational impacts on the state of Black Freedom.
