@LizHighleyman @TaylorLorenz @kprather88 @Slate @CochraneLibrary @JenniferNuzzo @Jabaluck @VPrasadMDMPH What we have in the Cochrane study is a very peculiar standard of proof, incompatible with good public health practice. Require masks and also another measure? You are generating protection from both, but not RCT'ing either.

@LizHighleyman @TaylorLorenz @kprather88 @Slate @CochraneLibrary @JenniferNuzzo @Jabaluck @VPrasadMDMPH If I read your article and thread correctly, you think this lack of Cochrane style proof comes from the failure of significant population-level compliance. But we've seen massive peak levels of population compliance with masks. (Saying this with more confidence bc I'm in TN)

@LizHighleyman @TaylorLorenz @kprather88 @Slate @CochraneLibrary @JenniferNuzzo @Jabaluck @VPrasadMDMPH Re quality of masks, we would see higher quality mask use if (1) we provided high-quality masks freely and (2) messaging was clear. Already late 2021 showed shifts this way, when the space currently occupied by your article was instead filled w calls to up your mask game.

@LizHighleyman @TaylorLorenz @kprather88 @Slate @CochraneLibrary @JenniferNuzzo @Jabaluck @VPrasadMDMPH The best signal for differential use of masks is probably interregional and international. But since it indexes COVID concern in general, it will always be confounded by other protective measures, and thus never right for Cochrane.
