@jeffryhouse I tend to see the place of hospitals in this as primarily a historical story… how did the military and quarantine hospitals (concerned w/ controlling exit and deterring faking of illness, respectively) contribute to the contemporary structure of the hopsital?

@jeffryhouse How does the scientific function of the hospital as a place to observe and alter the progression of an illness, something Foucault argues pretty convincingly is a post-1750 phenomenon shape its form today?

@jeffryhouse Most, but not all of the socially problematic aspects of confinement and pathologization today live in the asylum/mental hospital lineage. But they've hardly been marginal to the history of these institutions.

@jeffryhouse But to circle back a bit, the creation of nightmarish versions of these institutions (pathological variants, one might call them) isn't a hypothetical issue…

@jeffryhouse the Gulag was a factory/prison hybrid, German psychiatric hospitals housed the T4 mass murder program, US/Canadian residential schools were places of confinement and abuse.

@jeffryhouse At a minimum, understanding the constituent components of "functional" disciplinary institutions helps us understand these pathological ones. But maybe, understanding the "pathologies" gives some insight into the kinds of power embedded in the normal ones too.
