    1. I have seen exactly zero commentaries on how Thurgood Marshall might have hung onto the Court for 1.5 more years and spared us Clarence Thomas. (He outlived the 1993 inauguration.) Can't tell if this is just misogyny or also the absence of social media.

    Thomas and Ginsburg created the role of civil rights lawyer-turned-Supreme Court Justice. Integral to that role was faith in a form of non-partisanship that no longer prevails in the USA.

      That faith was integral to a Black man pleading before an all-white Supreme Court, and a woman pleading before an all-male Supreme Court to profoundly shift the United States in ways that we still benefit from today.

        Hubris and faith that the political system would morally cohere was integral to who these individuals were and the work they did.

          I do not question the choice of such a man to retire from his work when it exceeded his grasp, or of such a woman to proceed while still capable of doing the one thing that gave her life meaning for six more years out of a far-off fear.
