  1. The partisan affiliation of the Bolivian president has a dramatic effect on the scale of deadly political violence since 1982… Right-wing presidents sent security forces to kill 5.8x as many people per year in power, contributing to 2.5x ratio of overall deaths during the rule.

      Put another way, presidents on the political right governed for 54% of days since October 1982, but were in office during 75% of deaths, 88% of killings by the security forces, and 82% of deadly acts against the security forces.

        The only total going the other way is deaths apart from the state, which were 1.2x higher during left government. Half of such deaths occurred under right and under left governments.

          For this analysis, the UDP and MAS-IPSP comprise the left. The neoliberal period runs from Paz Estenssoro to Mesa. And Áñez and the two-day military interregnum in 2019 are the "Right Interim" government. Rodriguez (no deaths) is not categorized.

            There are even larger variations among presidencies: two presidents (Rodriguez, Arce) avoided state killings of protesters. Two more (Morales, Mesa) saw fewer than 3 per year. Four presidents oversaw 20+ state killings per year, topping with 142 in Sánchez de Lozada's 14 months.
