  1. Thanks to COVID, Americans in 2021 can expect to live 2.26 years less than we could in 2019. Life expectancy is under 77 years for the first time since 2001. washingtonpost.com/health/2022/04/07/life-expectancy-covid/

US life expectancy took a hit of 1.87 years in 2020, and a further hit of 0.39 years in 2021. COVID deaths in the first quarter of 2022 are on course to be as numerous as last year. This was the worst setback in any rich country.

Most other rich countries saw their life expectancy rebound in 2021 as vaccination and public health measures prevented more COVID deaths.

If we choose to make COVID a permanent part of our landscape ("live with COVID"), then this life expectancy decline will persist. Given that other life-threatening conditions from diabetes to heart disease are long-term sequelae of COVID, it could continue to grow.
