As you can see from the chart, each wave of COVID receded to a temporary and unstable equilibrium level. With Omicron, we might expect the new equilibrium to be lower (because fewer uninfected left) or lower (because it's more infectious).

But we don't know what that equilibrium will be until the deaths start to come down, and they're still rising.

Boring reminder: a pandemic is over when it stops killing people en masse, and we can be reasonably sure it won't kill people en masse very soon.
