Bookmarking this tweet for when we know the peak number of deaths from Omicron in the USA. @ashishkjha/1484012934422573057

We've known for two years that deaths peak 2-3 weeks after cases. Today's deaths were infected around New Year's.
-
We should expect the increase in cases since early January to be mirrored proportionately in an increase of deaths over the next couple weeks.
-
Omicron may be less deadly than Delta, but there's no reason to believe that January Omicron is less deadly than December Omicron.
-
Hard to say whether those infected in January will have greater or lesser population immunity to Omicron, but they seem to be much less vaccinated that the states and metropolitan areas that got hit in December.
-
Whatever the peak of US daily deaths is for Omicron, it's unfortunately going to be well over 2,000. Because math.
