        @celinegounder We have to stop saying "vaccines are the number 1, 2, and 3 tool in the toolbox." It's just not quantitatively true. 3 reasons… 1. If vaccine effectiveness is 89%, then wearing a high-quality mask reduces risk of infection by a comparable amount. (We should do both.)

      @celinegounder If vaccine effectiveness is lower, as it is for infection with Omicron, this is even more true.

    @celinegounder 2. Deployment time. If a new variant is coming in less than a month, but boosters are needed to provide adequate protection, vaccines are *not as effective* as non-pharmaceutical interventions.

      @celinegounder 3. Immunocompromised individuals. Every time we talk about COVID, we need to remind people that some of the folks around them are vulnerable. Only NPIs and concerted effort to reduce transmission can protect them.

        @celinegounder Around May, the Biden administration opted for a vaccine-only COVID response, abandoning NPIs, workplace standards, test and mask procurement. Honest messaging recognizes that strategy was a failure.
