                      1. The underlying CDC study of American Indian and Alaska Native mortality is worth reading on its own. stacks.cdc.gov/view/cdc/110370 @ShoshanaBee76/1463683257787043845

Stunningly, the US government seems to have only published detailed mortality data for American Indians in 1960, previously and subsequently (through 1993) lumping them with other racial groups.

Some of this long delay can be attributed to the very high rates of misclassification of Native Americans/American Indians and Alaska Natives on death certificates.

How much misclassification? 20-45% of self-id'd AIAN's are classified as another race, usually white, on death certificates. In areas w/ few Native Americans, the misclassification rate is 82%!

The AIAN Mortality database covers 64% of the Native American population, but is limited to counties w/ the IHS A study on 2008 mortality in this disproportionately reservation-centered sample (though with many Wester urban areas) found AIAN life expectancy of 71.

This study can't see past misclassification, but instead adjusts figures to compensate. Also, handling Hispanic-origin Natives was too complicated and the researchers did not attempt it.

Native American life expectancy lags all other racial groups.

Native Americans are more likely to die from all 14 of 15 leading causes of death than white Americans. Relatively to whites, homicide, liver disease, and diabetes are much more dangerous to AIAN people.

Native Americans are at a greater risk of death than whites at all ages up to 85, after which they have lower risk. A similar pattern affects/afflicts Black Americans. Whether this is a statistical anomaly or due to the relative hardiness of surviving elders is debated.
