      Huanuni miners hosted the founding of the FSTMB miners' federation in 1944. Their region endured massacres in 1923, 1942, and 1967 (largely at Catavi, Uncía, and Llallagua).

    One Huanuni miner died in 1995 labor protests and three died when they joined 2003 protests against gas privatization.

      It would not be surprising if former Huanuni miners were among the 11 retirees killed in a January 2003 bus crash after their protest march was intercepted by security forces.

        Deadly fratricidal clashes in 2006 between cooperative and salaried miners killed fifteen miners, a shopkeeper, and a police officer. This resulted in the cooperativists being incorporated into the salaried workforce.

          So Huanuni has both a traditional vanguard in the Bolivian labor movement and a long history of tragedy that is lengthened by the accidental crash this morning.
