        Many Israeli and American Jewish youth groups, quite naturally, take learning and mourning trips to Germany and Poland. I was there for the same reasons, remembering my Jewish ancestors and relatives. 2/

      But here's the thing. The Krakow ghetto, the Nazi province of Silesia, and Auschwitz were all instruments of ethnic expansionism, turning Poland into the German Reich. 3/

    There was a literal German invasion and military occupation right in that land. And forcible expulsion, imprisonment, and sometimes enslavement and execution of Poles along with the more consistent murder of Jews (who sometimes were also just expelled too). 4/

      This is the danger of decontextualizing suffering. Of teaching that the evil in history is that people hate us, and not that emergence of racism, of ethnonationalism, of invasions, colonialism, military occupations, and tiers of citizenship. 5/

        Without such a cosmopolitan perspective — one which Jews have been vital to creating, I might add — expansion and expulsion can be put forward as an answer to genocidal hatred rather than a continuation of it. 6/6
