    @jeffryhouse @pauloCanning First, this is the world that many of us live in within our borders, given access to both "know-your-rights" training and lawyers. At the border, however, our right to our own home country is unclear and lawyers often aren't allowed.

      @jeffryhouse @pauloCanning Second, the right to remain silent is a core freedom in the United States, abridgeable only with pretty extensive interventions (i.e., a warrant or a grand jury). Fishing-expedition interrogations are generally refusable; again borders muddy that.

        @jeffryhouse @pauloCanning Third, and most relevant to realpolitik, do you really want to countenance interrogation in Venezuela or Bolivia of everyone who has spoken to a US diplomat or Senator? Or do we reserve hypocritical outrage for those cases and accept interrogations of our dissidents?
