@jeffryhouse @pauloCanning An absolutely fundamental expectation in a free society is that one need not be questioned by the state for one's political opinions or associations, only for suspected crimes.
-
@jeffryhouse @pauloCanning Within the USA, one can invoke this freedom by merely asking "Am I being detained?" and walk away if authorities, lacking the cause to do so, say no.
-
@jeffryhouse @pauloCanning At the border the state creates and exploits a loophole to this rule. One is being interrogated for admission to the USA, and for customs inspection, but the questions asked are about politics.
-
@jeffryhouse @pauloCanning This has happened for decades but the exploitation of the loophole was an explicit recommendation of the 9/11 commission.
-
@jeffryhouse @pauloCanning Of course @medeabenjamin is not a terrorist but rather a political critic. The same tactic is used against pacifists (like Kathy Kelly) and journalists (like Laura Poitras).
-
@jeffryhouse @pauloCanning @medeabenjamin In most such cases, the "intelligence value" to be gained is laughable: What was Medea going to tell them about Venezuela? It's pure intimidation of political opponents and deterrence of incisive journalism.
