      Thanks to six weeks of self-imposed sanity, and of bruising self-imposed isolation, we've gone from a quarter million cases a day to under 70,000. But our best day of 2021 is still close to our worst day of the summer surge.

        There's still nothing natural about the waves of this epidemic; choice and chance rather than some law of gravity governs when a "wave" ends. What goes up only comes down when we collectively act to make it so.

          (And "wave" may be the wrong metaphor because waves naturally fall. Now forest fires, they burn til they're put out or the whole forest has been run through.)
