Clyburn really had little good to say about Biden, but he does have clear memories of Jesse Jackson and Amiri Baraka backing McGovern while southern Blacks resisted.

Clyburn has earned the right to fear rather than hope. He's paid his dues and done his time. But he shouldn't pass on trauma and fear as legacy.

Generalizing a political outcome across 48 years because "the country isn't ready" is an endeavor fraught with danger. None of us sees or knows the country as a whole.

And 2008 is of course the greatest example of why "the country isn't ready" is both post-traumatic and self-defeating. Only a ritualistic repetition of "hope" steeled people against the fear of failure.

I refuse to make an election a half century ago the reason why we can't have universal health care, childcare for all, and an end to student debt. Especially not when in 2008, a Dem ran the table while promising a health care overhaul and new taxes on the rich.
