Here's a breakdown of the burned areas of the forest, per FAN-Bolivia. At least one sixth of the Chiquitano dry forest (1.4/8.6M ha) has burned in the last two months. #BoliviaFires #SOSChiquitanía

The intrusion of the fires on forested lands in Santa Cruz is very clear in this map. #BoliviaFires #deforestation

While we can't do a one-for-one extrapolation between the area of forest burned and the net loss of forest (deforestation), the burned forest area so far is over eight times the typical annual deforestation rate in Bolivia. woborders.blog/2019/08/29/bolivia-deforestation/ #BoliviaFires

The forest loss is concentrated in Santa Cruz department, site of the largest deforestation hotspot in South America, at least since 2008. woborders.blog/2019/08/29/bolivia-deforestation/

The 3.9 million hectares of Santa Cruz department that have burned is OVER 10 PERCENT of the whole 37-million hectare department. #BoliviaFires

Again, here's my take on why this is happening: a convergence of (right-wing) agribusiness in Santa Cruz and the territorial vision of the (left-wing) Morales government behind a destructive land use model. woborders.blog/2019/08/27/bolivia-burning-policy/
